co-Ethology Research Unit, Instituto Superior de Psicologia Aplicada, Lisbon
This research unit operates in the marine sciences. It grew from an initial core of researchers dedicated to the study of fish behaviour, especially in littoral fish. The study of behaviour of littoral fish led the team to extend its activities to the study of fish ecology, larval biology, monitoring and conservation, biogeography, phylogeny, phylogeography and evolution; estuarine and freshwater fish were also integrated in our area of research.

The Animal Welfare research activity in IRTA started in 1996 in the Meat and Carcass Quality Department. By that time, the main research activity was oriented to the assessment of pre-slaughter handling on meat quality in pigs. The Animal Welfare Group was created in 2009 with the new scientific structure of IRTA, and it is part of the Animal Production scientific area. Currently, the Animal Welfare research activities are focused on four consolidated main lines: animal welfare at slaughter, animal welfare during transport, animal welfare assessment systems on farm and at slaughterhouse; and evaluation of alternatives to painful management procedures (such as dehorning and castration).
