Thiago Bernardino

Dr. Thiago Bernardino de Almeida is a professor at the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University Santo Amaro, with the program in One Health.
Thiago is a veterinarian (Federal University of Uberlândia) who also holds a masters degree and a PhD from the University of São Paulo (USP), where he conducted research on pig welfare and its connections with nutrition, reproduction and epigenetics. In addition, as a research fellow at the University of Maryland Baltimore, Dr. Bernardino worked with microRNAs and extracellular vesicles in pig semen, in order to assess the effects of housing and environmental enrichment on boars. His expertise on animal behavior, welfare, and pig production has allowed him to explore approaches like the relationship between epigenetics and welfare; prenatal stress and offspring outcomes; nutrition and welfare; technologies and welfare; humane slaughter; among other fascinating areas.

There are nearly 700 members worldwide and each year the Society assembles for a major International Congress, where in addition to addresses by special keynote speakers, members present their latest research findings. There are also regular regional conferences held to encourage local knowledge exchange.
